A severe thunderstorm watch/warning will be used for the examples.
The same goes for other watches/warnings.
What is a watch?: A watch means that conditions will be favorable for a certain event. In this blog, a severe thunderstorm watch will be used as the example. Say for instance that severe thunderstorms were forecast for the day, and a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for your area. This means that conditions are FAVORABLE for severe weather soon, but do not guarantee that anything will happen. It is a safety precaution. It also means that you should prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions if any occur, and to also be prepared for any possible warnings.
What is a warning?: A warning means that danger is imminent or occurring. For example, if a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for your area, it means that the danger of a severe thunderstorm is imminent or occurring and you need to move quickly to your safe area.
The final Severe Weather Awareness week blog will cover social media communication.
Have a good Saturday.
