My fellow weather watchers,
When I started this page in the fall of 2014, I started it wanting to make a difference in the natural state. I had no idea where that would lead or where it would go. When I found Cameron that fall seeing his knowledge as a forecaster, I knew I had to bring him on. We had a vision and a passion to bring the unmatched weather coverage to the state. We eventually grew and brought Jason Gann on in 2015 and continued to grow into what we are today. We have a long way to go but we are on the right track. Never would have I thought we would see 47k people on our page just 3 years later. Having to grow, we had to add on to the team with Michal and Mark and we are excited as to what they will bring as we grow. That however is not why write to you.
I married the love of my life in 2013. She knew my passion for chasing and weather way back when we met in 2009. Well nearly 4 years has passed since that day I said I do in the winter snow on a cold Decembers day, 21 degrees to be exact. This Thursday we will be expecting our very first child, a little girl by the name of Ainslae Magnolia Rose Smith. As you know with new life comes new responsibility, commitments and challenges to what the future holds. That being said, I have decided it is best that I take a BRIEF leave of absence from bringing you weather coverage as I adjust to this new lifestyle, fatherhood. There will be challenges I know but I’m always up for a challenge. Now if there is a major threat of weather, then yes, I will step in and help cover where I’m needed. But overall will need a few weeks to adjust to the new life. I do plan to be back by Mid October but we know how things can change so fast.
I will be turning operations entirely over to Co-CEO and Senior Forecaster Cameron Barnes effective Wednesday. Currently it’s a joint operation but that will change. There is still a full team of forecasters here, dedicated to bringing you the best weather coverage around. I look forward to turning the reigns over to him for a bit and seeing this young man, full of potential spread his wings and fly within this organization. He has spent countless hours designing our first app that will release Halloween as well as studying up for the long-range forecasts. Coverage will continue to be unmatched with him.
A thank you to the older followers on the page who have given your support for the upcoming change in my life and thank you to the new ones for your thoughts and prayers of encouragement. It truly means a lot to know we are appreciated as much as we are. I ask you to show your support to the team as they take on more roles in my absence and continue to keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I transient into this new role. I am excited as can be about this. Remember to us you aren’t just followers you are family.
Thank you to all of you for your support over these last 3 years and the years to come. Thank you for making us your #1 source for all things Arkansas weather. I will return ready to bring you blogs and new podcasts on weather as well as in depth forecasts once again.
Until then, enjoy the weather and be safe!
~Founder/CEO/Chief Forecaster Derek S. Smith.
